Representative of the Neo-Gothic style developed in the mid-nineteenth century, this finely wrought side chair reflects the influence of the architect Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-52). A notable figure associated with the Arts and Craft revival in Britain, Pugin sought to reform the style and manufacture of furniture by placing a renewed emphasis on the relationship between structure and design. Inspired by the teachings of John Ruskin (1819-1900) who advocated a return to the Gothic aesthetic, Pugin designed furniture in a medieval style that displays a sophisticated balance of construction and decoration while remaining sensitive to the fundamental nature of the materials involved.1
